The Kallimarmaro is the world's only stadium built entirely of marble: a white Pentelic bowl for fifty thousand, raised on Athens' ancient stadium (330 BC) and remade in marble for the first modern Olympics of 1896 โ the Games' literal bridge: the modern Olympiad was born here, and every Olympics still receives its flame from this altar's handover ceremony. The visit is interactive by nature: run the actual track, mount the podium for the inevitable photo, climb the top row for the Acropolis-Lycabettus panorama โ and the audio guide (in the ticket) tells 1896 and the first marathon race. Thirty to ninety minutes suffice โ and its spot between Zappeion and the National Garden makes it the city walk's natural station. The marble is a midday furnace in summer: take its edges.
