If you stood before the Orangerie's water lilies and wondered where those canvases were born, the answer is seventy-five minutes from Paris: Giverny, where Claude Monet lived for forty-three years and built with his own hands the garden he painted thousands of times โ the Japanese pond with its green bridge and real lilies, and the colour-burst flower garden before his pink house. Season is everything here: the gardens open only from late March to early November, peaking in May-June when the pond truly blooms. An early midweek morning gives you the Japanese bridge without the photo queues. Getting there: train from Gare Saint-Lazare to Vernon (50 minutes), then the shuttle bus or a rented bike for the lovely seven kilometres to the village.
