Start at Heroes' Square early while it is empty, then Vajdahunyad Castle, then the zoo with children before noon, then lunch and a picnic on the grass, and finish at the Széchenyi Baths in the late afternoon — hot water after a day of walking is the right order.
Entirely so by day: wide lit paths, constant movement and plenty of playgrounds. Evenings are calm on the main axes too, but as in any large park, stick to well-used paths after dark.
Every season works here for a different reason: spring and autumn for walking, summer for the gardens and picnics despite the heat, and winter for the ice rink and the hot outdoor pools at Széchenyi — far and away the most distinctive experience.
Scattered kiosks and cafés at tourist prices. It is cheaper to buy at a shop near the metro before you go in and sit on the grass, or step out into the surrounding streets, where restaurants are better and cost less.

The Városliget is Budapest's largest public park and one of the first planned public parks anywhere: laid out at the end of the 18th century to be a promenade for everyone rather than a royal hunting ground, an idea decades ahead of its time. What makes it exceptional is that it is not only a park but gathers into one space more than whole cities manage: the Széchenyi thermal baths, Vajdahunyad Castle on its island, the zoo and botanical garden, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Art at its entrance, the modern House of Music Hungary with its perforated roof, and a lake that becomes Europe's largest open-air ice rink in winter. Its formal entrance is Heroes' Square, and it is the end of both Andrássy Avenue and the yellow metro line. Walking it is free and always open, and its paths are wide, level and entirely suited to families. Practically: this is the best area in Budapest to give a whole day to — you can spend morning to evening here without boarding transport once.
