Easiest are the organised sunset tours (your hotel books them), afternoon-evening. Independent: the coastal KTEL from Pedion Areos roughly hourly โ plan the post-sunset return in advance: the last buses fill with pilgrims like you.

Sounion is Attica's legendary full stop: a rock headland charging into the Aegean, Poseidon's temple (444 BC) on its crest โ white Doric columns on blue from every side, built by Pericles' age as a sacred seamark visible for miles. Here king Aegeus threw himself to the waves believing his son Theseus dead โ naming the Aegean Sea. Its sunset is mainland Greece's most famous: the sun drowning in the Aegean between the columns, the evening pilgrimage a standing Athenian rite โ and on a southern column Byron carved his name (1810) among centuries of signatures. The road is half the trip: an hour along the Athens Riviera corniche and its coves โ leave mid-afternoon, swim a bay en route, meet the sinking sun at the temple. The coastal KTEL bus serves the carless.
